Spatial Allegory

Buket Ada Kılıç & Selma Koç

Spaces are not merely physical areas; they also encompass mental, emotional, and social dimensions. “Spatial Allegory” blurs the boundaries of this multilayered concept, navigating the fine line between presence and absence, between legibility and abstraction. The works of Buket Ada Kılıç and Selma Koç create two distinct paths suspended between individual and collective consciousness, and when experienced together, they form a holistic universe that offers a unique, singular experience for the viewer.

In her collages, Buket Ada Kılıç recontextualizes found objects — toy fragments, feathers, cut paper, and other materials — stripping them of their original essence to allow them to take on new life. These materials do not simply become part of a surface; they transform into the building blocks of allegorical spaces that map our inner worlds. In her works, notions of place and time dissolve in subtle ways; figures become symbols, pathways become passages. These structures invite viewers to wander through a realm that is at once familiar and uncanny. Each line, each form, brings together fears, dreams, and subconscious imagery, creating a journey that emphasizes discovery and reflection.

In contrast, Selma Koç’s practice examines the spaces of social consciousness and power dynamics. Her work reminds us that the sacred is also a construct. In Koç’s scenes, spaces lose their conventional functions, becoming undefined — a stage, an empty expanse, or a site of authority. Within these areas, animal figures emerge, drawing on literary references from Aesop to Orwell, and transform into potent allegories of societal hierarchies. Positioned as symbolic expressions of power, status, and violence, these figures — enriched by intricate details — offer viewers a multifaceted perspective and a sense of visual illusion.

When the works of Buket Ada Kılıç and Selma Koç come together in the same space, the exhibition becomes a vast field where layers of inner and social consciousness intersect and merge. Their coexistence demonstrates that each work gains meaning not only in its own context but also through cross-references and interaction; the viewer experiences a journey navigating between two distinct pathways. “Spatial Allegory” builds bridges between the allegorical images of the inner self and the symbolic structures of society, exploring a shared language of fear, belief, power, and transformation. This exhibition celebrates the synergy and coherence that emerge when distinct artistic trajectories converge, offering art lovers the opportunity to traverse a singular universe of simultaneous perspectives.
